Overview of Lyon’s fascinating past: once the capital of Gaul; then leader of the silk industry in the middle ages; a fierce bastion of résistance during the second world war, and today, France’s third largest city after Paris and Marseille. After lunch , a stroll through the Vieux Lyon—classified patrimoine de l’humanité by UNESCO—with our unusual conteur des rues. Fireworks this evening on the Saône to celebrate the quatorze juillet.

The current state of les écoles françaises will be discussed at our morning seminar, and a visit this afternoon with French teaching colleagues in their class will enhance our understanding of this complex and evolving issue, so dear to our own hearts. A clip from another riveting film will help us understand some of the issues facing French teachers today.

Journée libre! You’re free to faire la grasse matinée and roam the city on your own today, or you can join us in an outing to the route des vins de Beaujolais. Stops include a visit to les Halles Paul Bocuse, lunch amidst the vineyards, a stroll in a picturesque village of the pierres dorées. (option includes lunch)

L’immigration en France aujourd’hui : intégration ? assimilation ? ghettos ? rejet ? Immigration in France covers a wide span of different cultural groups, and we’ll discuss this complex issue with the aid of film. We’ll focus this afternoon on local Algerian/French women who will share their personal stories with us. The day culminates in a tour of the Mosquée de Lyon, the second largest in France. Couscous for lunch in restaurant marocain.

Exercices de style, faux amis, connotations poétiques : a day in the classroom for us teachers.….Afternoon visit to la Croix Rousse, a vibrant section of the city with incredible trompe l’oeil paintings on buildings. Each of you will be a guest for dinner with a Lyonnaise family this evening.

La politique française. How exactly is France run ? How is a president elected ? What makes up la 5eme Republique? What’s the difference between la gauche et l’UMP, and whatever happened to le Front National? And since all politics are local, a visit to the Hotel de Ville this afternoon. We’ve requested an audience with Monsieur le Maire de Lyon.
